Waist: 62 cm

Best For: groomed-snow turns of all shapes; bumps

SKIING Magazine Review: This is the third year we've tested the 9.18, and every year it comes out near the top. A true super-sidecut, it's a ski with a turning compulsion. "Turns by itself," "zips from edge to edge," said both male and female testers. In bumps, it's "remarkably nimble and forgiving," said Diana Rogers. On groomed, it'll do short or long carves effortlessly. In deep snow, however, the 9.18 is a bit unruly. The narrow waist tends to sink, and the wide tip makes it "want to turn even when you don't," said Helen Olsson. Keep it on packed snow, and it's awesome.

Plus: No known weaknesses

Minus: Finding a pair before they sell out

SKI Magazine Review: What do you say about a ski that gets a No. 1 ranking in nearly every performance category? Buy it. "How soon can I get a pair?" Delliquadri asked. "Slalom-style hits, long GS arcs, steered banks-all were outstanding." The key to the 9.18's short-turn agility is its compact (18 meter) sidecut. But it's "precise and powerful in long arcs, too," said Palmer. Campbell agreed: "It lies quietly on the snow at speed and has abundant life when you slow down." So how do you ski what Lewis describes as "a rocket with a conscience"? It hardly matters. The 9.18 forgives a lifetime of sins. Hell, it even rewards them. (Now there's a ski we love!) Tenacious edge grip on ice, power in crud and "buttery" turn initiation that all come from simply tipping the ski on its edge. "It'll make you look as if you ski every day," said Bigford. "Absolutely the best in its category," said Ryan. '
