Subject: new faces in IT

I think you all received an email from Steven Lee re the newest member of our Aps team - Romel Halili - who started today. I hope you'll take a minute to stop by and say hello.

As well, there are 4 other new faces in IT as of today, although they are not new to the company!

Ton Ensink, Hanita Namiranian, Rachel Bourizk, and Margaret Tam have transferred to IT from BIS. Rachel is currently on mat leave, having given birth to "Melissa" on May 14th. When she returns, she will join Margaret and Hanita on the content creation team in Aps. Rachel has recently been working with Sales Ops on the Sales compensation model and Sales related reporting. Margaret has been focused on reporting Oracle data, while Hanita has been spending her time on WebIAP reporting most recently but provides content services to many departments across the company. Ton will be primarily assisting the Aps team with project management, but I'm sure we will leverage his Homer/Holos knowledge a little bit along the way as well.

Our IT team continues to grow to serve the needs of the company. Please join we in welcoming these 5 people to our team.

July 19, 1996 - May 21, 2000: Weyerhaeuser (former MacMillan Bloedel)

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada)

01 June 1997 - 21 May 2001: From February to May 2000 I worked as a member of the Intranet web transition team to transition and integrate former MacMillan Bloedel intranet sites into Weyerhaeuser web servers. I also designed and created a new Vancouver Head Office intranet server with the content owners. At the same time I continued my assignment as the Y2K specialist to prepare the company for the February 29, 2000 (Leap Year) rollover issues and kept monitoring the potential business systems effects of Y2K. I also assisted the Common Message Interface practice with the conversion of EDI ANSI X.12 message into Message Control Documents.

From June 1997 to February 2000 I worked as an independent IT Consultant (Year 2000 Specialist) for the Vancouver based Year 2000 Information Centre of Weyerhaeuser Company (former MacMillan Bloedel Limited until the merger on 01-Nov-1999). In 1997 I was responsible for setting up the Year 2000 compliance repository of all the automated systems within MacMillan Bloedel divisions, mainly in North America (200 sites). Also setting up and manning the Year 2000 Information Center and the corporate intranet Y2K web site (launched in June 1998) is part of my tasks, as well as implementing and deploying data and application test scenarios. The 5 phase project covers all business computer systems, process control systems, office PC network and other computerized systems, site specific systems, critical supplier/customer management and contingency planning. I also created the plan of attack and mission statement for the implementation of the Y2K information center and I am reporting directly to the Year 2000 Program Manager. Currently I am responsible for managing the corporate head office Y2K program (22 departments), give technical Y2K support to the Y2K coordinators and the implementation of the corporate Y2K Rollover Communication Guidelines for all personnel.

Through Contractors Network Corporation I worked as an independent IT Consultant.

Images of my office (before we moved to a different floor in January 1999). The are more pictures available in the PICTURES section (under WORK).

MacMillan Bloedel is one of Canada's largest forest products companies with sales from continuing operations in 1998 of $4.2 billion. Approximately 65 percent of MB's stock is held in Canada and 30 percent is held in the U.S.   MB manages 2 million hectares of productive timberlands that supply most of its fibre requirements.  Of these timberlands, 1.1 million hectares are in British Columbia.  The products of MB and its affiliated companies are marketed throughout the world and include lumber, panel boards, engineered lumber, containerboard and corrugated containers.

July 19, 1996 - April 30, 1997: Through Contractors Network Corporation I worked as an independent IT Consultant for the Information Systems Services department at the head office of MacMillan Bloedel Limited in Vancouver. I developed and maintained management and production reports with the Progress Report Builder for Windows reporting tool. And I also provided user support for all MB's users (in North America) of the Lumber Track order, production, shipping and invoicing system.

The market leading Lumber Track application was created by Progressive Solutions (a.k.a. PSI, with offices in Richmond-Vancouver and Vernon) in Progress and is used at different locations of MacMillan Bloedel's composite wood lumber mills. These locations use Hewlett Packard 9000 systems and HP-UX as their platform. All sites are connected within MacMillan Bloedel's private virtual frame relay network. Development, (project) management and user support is being supplied by MacMillan Bloedel's IS&S department (Information Systems & Services) at the head office in Vancouver.

March 4 - June 6, 1996: Pivotal Software Inc.

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada)

Well, after a lot of invitations and interviews I was contracted at Pivotal Software Inc. in North Vancouver. It was the first company who invited me for a serious range of interviews (started at January 14,1996). I experienced the meetings as very pleasant and friendly and found this job the most interesting position out of 5 offers I had at that time. The other 4 companies still didn't made up their minds after a first range of interviews. But I am glad I found my first position which was in the line of the kind of assignment I was looking for.

The description of the job was 'customization specialist' of a new application, released on April 2, 1996. The company had 29 employees in 1996 and is situated 12 minutes walking from my home. This is their office and training center:

My contract started at March 4, 1996. Pivotal developed a very sophisticated Back Office based program. For more information, please visit Pivotal's web-site. A great team and lots of challenges. Involved are platforms based on MS Back Office, MS Windows NT and Microsoft SQL Server.

My first Canadian contract was signed on February 28, 1996. I worked on a project for the San Francisco based media company MRP (Media Research Plus). For more information about the Pivotal Software, please go to Pivotal Place, their homepage (some options at their web site are restricted).
