Sjoukje visited Ton in Vancouver from Friday 25-Jul-Mar-203 until Friday 15-Aug-2003 for the fourth time. This is her travel report with pictures. All times are in local time zones.
Sjoukje left Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at 14.00 (1 3/4 hour delayed) and arrived at Vancouver International Airport at 14.00. Fourty minutes later than originally scheduled. Her flight was with Dutch airline Martin Air (MP 819). Sjoukje was earlier in the arrival hall than Ton ... ahum.
After arriving at Ton's apartment we stayed there. Ton BBQ'd chicken and cooked dinner. To keep Sjoukje awake we walked on the Seawall. Around 23.00 hrs we fell asleep.
Sjoukje woke up at 5 AM. Around 8 AM Sjoukje and Ton went jogging on the seawall. Then we had breakfast. In the afternoon we met Kimberly at the Caribbean Fest in North Vancouver. After grocery shopping we picked up Frans and Marieke Luit for a BBQ on Third Beach in Stanley Park. After the BBQ on the beach we all went for a coffee at Starbucks on Denman Street.
After breakfast we met Jan Muller at Costco to have 4 brand new tires mounted on Ton's car. Then we went to Jan's place were we stayed the whole day around his swimming pool. We met Willy, Robert, Cara, Jessica, Jan's mother and Willy.
Grocery shopping at Save-on-foods in North Vancouver, lunch at the Yaletown Market, visited BMO for options, Crystal Decisions (returning computer parts). We also strolled through the downtown shopping streets.
We visited the moving company Williams International in Port Coquitlam. And picked up Ton's flight ticket in Richmond, had lunch in Steveston Harbour and went to Crystal Decisions to discuss Ton's options. After that, Sjoukje and Ton started their first part of the camping trip in British Columbia. They took the ferry to Bowen Island and around 8 PM they met Derick and Christa Dannhauser and stayed at their place.
We left Bowen Island and went north on highway 99 to Squamish (lunch), Whistler, Lilloet, Kamloops, Chase and then to Seymour Arm at Shuswap Lake Lake (camping). We arrived there around 11 PM and because it was so pitch dark we slept in the car.
When we woke up around 8 AM we really felt all our bones in our bodies. We moved to the campground and prepared the tent. We spent the afternoon on the beach (40 degrees Celsius). Lunch at the restaurant and dinner cooked by ourselves.
We stayed another day at Seymour Arm. Over the hills we saw smoke from the huge wild fires in Barriere.
We left Seymour Arm. On our trip we drove through the smoke of the wild fires. In Kelowna we visited the Mission Hill winery. That evening our exhaust pipe broke so we had to spent the night at a parking lot of the Bear Creek campground (campground was full because of the long BC Day weekend).
We spent the whole morning and afternoon around Canadian Tire. They replaced a part of the exhaust. Just good enough to get us back to Vancouver. We had to call off our appointment at the river rafting company in Boston Bar. They allowed us to reschedule for Monday. That night we stayed at the Skihist provincial campground just north of Lytton.
Today we did the river rafting adventure trip at Reo Rafting on the Nahatlatch river near Boston Bar. Just before the base camp we saw a black bear sitting right next to the dusty road. On our way back to Vancouver we visited Erik Leidekker and his family in Chilliwack. We arrived home around 01.30 AM.
We slept in and unpacked our camping gear. We met Charl and Louise Kunzmann for a drink at the Yaletown Brew Pub and after that we went to the Dave Matthews Band live concert @ 7 PM in General Motors Place.
In the morning we visited ICBC (Insurance Company of British Columbia) to get information about getting insurance money refunded. After that we visited the Lonsdale Quy Market in North Vancouver where we had soup for lunch and we also bought fresh fruit.
In afternoon we checked a few auto shops for the price of exhaust pipes and to have the brakes checked. We also shopped for souvenirs on Robson Street.
19.00: BBQ on Ton's balcony.
22.00: Sjoukje and Ton enjoyed the annual Celebration Of Light fireworks display at English Bay together. Tonight's contestant: China. The Canadian Snowbirds stunt team flew over the city in the beginning of the evening (9 air planes).
10.00: We visited Budget Brake & Muffler where they replaced the muffler. After that we had the car washed, visited Shaw Cable for information about canceling the cable subscription and looked at new bikes at Sport Check in the Park Royal Mall in West Vancouver and Sport Mart in North Vancouver.
19.00: Dinner at Gyu Teppenyaki Restaurant (Japanese) on Alberni Street. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm .....
In the morning Sjoukje and Ton went to Budget brake & Muffler to have the exhaust pipe replaced. In the meantime we had breakfast at the Dutch Pannekoek House on Capilano Road. After we picked up the car they bought 2 new Canadian made mountain bikes at Sport Check in West Vancouver (Park Royal Mall). We then bought a Mocca Malt Frappucino at Starbucks.
14.00: Sjoukje and Ton went roller blading in Stanley Park. After that they picked up the bikes, which we packed in boxes for easier shipping to Holland.
In the evening we took the Aqua Bus to Granville Island where we had drinks and snacks at Bridges Restaurant.
After breakfast we went grocery shopping.
Afternoon: Ton's goodbye BBQ party at Kitsilano Beach (click here for details) in Vancouver. All friends and colleagues weare invited to join us. We started at 1 PM and stayed until 22.00 for the annual Celebration Of Light fireworks display at English Bay. Tonight was the finale. China was the winning country over the Czech Republic and Canada (struggling with computer failures).
Sjoukje and Ton went to the Abbotsford Air show with Frans and Marieke Luit and Mariane Kurvers. After we dropped off Mariane we went grocery shopping. That evening Sjoukje and Ton cooked dinner and had to prepare for the second part of their camping trip (primarily to Oregon, USA).
We woke up early to do the laundry and Ton had to visit MDS Laboratory for a blood sample. After packing our stuff in the car.the second part of Sjoukje and Ton's camping trip began around 11.00. Destination: Oregon coast and La Pine, Oregon (USA) where we stayed at friends of Sjoukje. She met them during her 3 month back packing trip in the fall of 2002 on the stretch between Toronto and Vancouver.
We left Vancouver around 11.00 and had to wait 2 hours at the US border. Then we had to wait another 30 minutes to get a visa for Sjoukje (US $ 6.00). e then continued our drive on highway 5 to Seattle, Portland, Salem, Eugene and then followed highway 58 and 97 to Gilchrist. At 23.00 we finally arrived at Carol and Phil's property between Gilchrist and La Pine. After quickly chatting with (waiting) Carol we went to bed in our own private guest house.
09:00: Wake up and meet the rest of the family.
11.00: Breakfast in "our" guest house.
15.30: Salad dinner with the family in Carol and Phil's house.
16.30: We left the property of Carol, Phil, Dorothy, Arthur ...
We left the state park campground in the Valley of Rogue (site F40) and took highway 99 (Oregon to California) to highway 101 where we drove north, back to Oregon. Around 7 PM we arrived at the Seal Rock RV Cove campground.
We left the Seal Rock RV Cove campground site 26 (south of Oregon) around 9 AM and started driving highway 101 north. Around 1 PM we arrived at Longview (south part of Washington state). Around 7 PM we hit the Canadian border and at 9 PM we arrived at Frans and Marieke Luit. They prepared a great BBQ dinner (steaks and fish with salad). We spent the evening there.
Sjoukje left Vancouver International Airport at 15.50 (30 minutes delay, one day after the big North East power outage). Her flight was with Dutch airline Martin Air (MP 820). Sjoukje had seat 23E.

Sjoukje arrived at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at 09.48 (8 minutes later than expected). She has to go back to work again on Monday 18-Aug-2003.
